What Can We Individuals Do?

Understand the interconnected, converging climate and ecological crises. Commit to facing the truth, even though it is difficult. See past your own set worldview; allow yourself to be challenged. Learn to see past the many delusions that obscure reality. We cannot arrive at effective actions without grasping our true situation. Our Situation page and our free e-book “Delusions and Contradictions” are relevant resources.

Understand the real constraints humanity faces. These crises are not problems we can solve – they are predicaments to be endured and responded to. It is too late for “solving problems”. The proper question is how do we survive and endure within the constraints that are real and compounding.

Learn to discern delusional responses. Some responses will be more effective than others – ideas will have more chance of becoming adopted if they are already understood and part of the conversation.

See your own place within the tribal divisions. Attempt to genuinely see the limitations and delusions of your own tribe, beyond focusing on the faults of the “other side”.

Understand that this system was not inevitable and that humans are not innately bad. While we are influenced by this system, we are capable of responding in a wise, just, and cooperative manner.

Understand your own complicity in this system. See that we are all participants in this system, and be willing to admit that to others. Your own imperfections are not hypocrisies when you genuinely advocate for change. We all have contradictions by the very nature of living in a system that is drastically in overshoot.

Understand that individual action is not sufficient. This system causes impacts that are far beyond those of each person. Transforming the structure within which we operate is more impactful than changing personal habits.

Simplify your life to the extent possible. Do this for several reasons: (1) to lessen your impact on the planet, knowing that individual action is not sufficient, (2) to minimize your own demands on this system, (3) to minimize your involvement in the system (thus decreasing your own complicity), (4) do it for your own integrity, and (5) to be better prepared for the difficult times ahead.

Initiate conversations with others. COVID has changed the context and created an openness to new possibilities. The space for fruitful conversations is opening up. Seize the opportunities, and be prepared for rejection. Remember that in times of great stress, reactions are “all over the map”.

Get support. It is too difficult to face these challenges on one’s own. Create community with like-minded others. Organizing is helpful, and honest interactions with sympatico friends is necessary for development.
